History of the CR-V

Even though Honda debuted the CR-V in Japan in the mid-1990s, the SUV didn't appear stateside until 1997. While the CR-V could have crossed the ocean much sooner, the Passport had just arrived on American highways, and Honda planned to give it a head start before introducing another new vehicle.

The initial CR-V model was available in one trim, taking some minor but identifiable inspiration from the older Honda Civic. The first model ran on a 2.0-liter engine that pushed 126 horsepower with a four-speed automatic transmission and optional Real-Time four-wheel drive. An extra trim was made available by 1999, providing 146 horsepower. The CR-V began its second generation in 2006, arriving with more interior space, additional comfort features, and other upgrades. In 2017, Honda released the third generation, which sports a reimagined exterior, updated interior, more room in the cabin, and the latest technology.
