The ability to stop your vehicle depends on your brakes. While you do have to change the brake pads every once in a while, there is also another factor to how well your brakes work. This factor is the brake fluid. Without brake fluid, your brakes are not going to work.

Another name for brake fluid is hydraulic fluid. This is the fluid that is responsible for moving the necessary components of your brakes so that you can effectively stop your vehicle. When you press down on the brake pedal, the fluid provides the pressure that is needed to apply the brakes.

There is more to brake fluid than just keeping from running out of it. There are cases when moisture from the air is absorbed in the brake fluid which can cause degradation in the fluid. This could have an effect in how effective the brake fluid is.
